Raglan woman, Merren Tait, is leading the way for others with plastic-free July coming up soon. Merren is going plastic free for a whole year! She’s already thrown out plastic packaging from her pantry, moving more tradional materials like glass and tin plate.
In Raglan Whaingaroa, A Rocha is supporting Plastic free July, saying we love Aotearoa / NZ and our beautiful landscape – And many of us work hard to protect and maintain the amazing ecosystems in our very own backyards and in our local communities. A Rocha supports and coordinates a range of projects and educational activities – raising awareness and action around the country – and this time were asking everyone to make an individual committment to join us in the PLASTIC FREE JULY CAMPAIGN!
Merren Tait in Whaingaroa Raglan and many of our wonderful volunteers are stepping up and doing just that! Not only are they making a personal commitment to reduce their use of plastic – their efforts will also make a direct impact by raising funds to protect a locally threatened seabird. Grey Faced Petrel / Oi come in each year to breed along the Mt Karioi coastline and the funds raised will go towards protecting Oi breeding habitat through the Karioi – Maunga ki te Moana project.

Take the Challenge!
“Single-use” includes plastic shopping bags, plastic cups, straws, plastic packaging…basically anything that’s intended only to be used once and then sent to landfill. If refusing ALL single-use plastic sounds too daunting this time, try the TOP 4 challenge (straws, plastic bags, plastic bottles &coffee cup lids).
The rules
- Attempt to consume no single-use plastic during July.
- Remember it’s not going to be easy! It is a challenge, not a competition so don’t worry about being perfect.
- Collect any unavoidable single-use plastic you buy. Keep in a dilemma bag and share it with us at the end of the challenge.
- It’s up to you regarding how long you participate. You might decide to go plastic-free for a day, a week, a month or longer! However long you choose will still make a contribution.
