Purge Orca Bar – Saturday November 7th – 8:30pm

by Rodger November 2, 2009

Four musicians who started jamming together six years ago have decided to bring their music out of the garage and on to the Orca Bar & Restaurant stage on November 7th. Playing a mixture of covers and originals, their repertoire eases you into the evening, and ends with a set that will have even the coolest audience members rocking. The band has played at parties and the Raglan Musicians’ Club over the years,
with variations in the line-up depending on who is around. Rhythm guitarist Michael Mackinnon points out that they have been encouraged by friends and fans to make themselves more accessible. Says Charlie Watson (lead guitar) “We used to call ourselves the Occasional Purge because we didn’t play gigs or rehearse that often, so that’s exactly what it was for us, musically. But we’ve been playing a lot more recently, so now we’re just Purge”.
As musicians they are a versatile bunch and all four are lead vocallists at some point during the evening. Bass player Lynne Wilkins says there are some surprises in the repertoire, including songs by former Raglan residents. There is a solid commitment within the group that transcends the garage band roots. Drummer Eric Otoka drives over from Te Kauwhata to rehearse and jam. He points out that all of the band members are, or have been, Raglan residents. They all agree that there’s a special energy when they get together that makes it worthwhile fitting in time for the band among other musical, work, and family commitments.
