What to do about the Raglan expansion proposal

Some local people and organisations have asked me, what they should do about the Waikato District Council’s submission to the Local Government Commission that would see the Raglan Ward expanded.  See http://raglan23.co.nz/2009/raglan-to-expand/ While there are some advantages in the proposal, there are some disadvantages.  For example our one already overworked Councillor would have to look after more people and a bigger area.   It is a mattter of weighing up the pros and cons.  For your view to be heard what is needed is a submission to the Local Government Commission.  Some possible submission themes could be:

  • Support the WDC proposal
  • Support the WDC proposal but only if more delegated authority is given to the Raglan Community Board
  • Oppose the WDC proposal and seek no change from the status quo
  • Oppose the WDC proposal and instead attach the Raglan Ward to Hamilton City Council
  • Suggest that a Waikato Super City is needed similar to the Auckland proposal

It apppears that the Government has not thought through the domino effect that carving up Franklin will cause in the Waikato.  Anybody can make their own submission to the Local Government commission if they believe they have a better proposal than the one being advocated by WDC.
