The Raglan Old School’s monthly Creative Market has always aimed to reflect the Raglan lifestyle. Now, it’s taking that ethos one step further, with the introduction of a new, waste minimisation policy.

Market co-ordinator Jacqueline Anderson and market assistant Merren Tait, have been working with stallholders to create a zero waste event.

They say that since the market attracts people from far and wide, it’s the ideal place to showcase the town’s commitment to zero waste.

“We want people to realise that this is what Raglan is all about, and that reducing waste can be done,” says Merren.

So, what steps will be in place to reduce waste?

  • New waste bins will be provided to separate recyclables from compostable and general waste.
  • Food providers will aim to use crockery and glasses, or compostable plates, containers and cutlery for takeaway foods. Alternatively, bring along your own cup for coffee and receive a 50c discount!
  • Re-usable bags will be available. All packaging used by stallholders will be recyclable or compostable. (No plastic bags!)
  • A Waste Educator will be stationed alongside the recycling bins at each market, to direct waste into the correct bins.
  • All stallholders will be required to sign and comply with the Waste Minimisation Policy.

The new policy will also be in place for all events held at the Old School Arts Centre.

Are your cupboards groaning under the weight of excess crockery? Donate the pieces you’re no longer using to the Old School, and help reduce the need for disposable containers.
