Whāingaroa Weedbusters and eighteen other Waikato organisations, community groups and volunteers have been recognised for the difference they’re making. They include local coaches and environmental champions to youth leaders and support organisations. Hosted by Mayor Aksel Bech, the annual awards recognise the outstanding individuals, groups and organisations whose dedication, generosity and service help make our communities stronger, more connected and better places to live.
Whāingaroa Weedbusters is a volunteer-led community initiative restoring native biodiversity across Raglan by removing pest plants and encouraging locals to take action.
Now in its seventh year, the group has achieved major results on a shoestring budget through countless volunteer hours, practical working bees, education, workshops, and community outreach.
Volunteers work across reserves, walkways, roadsides, marae, private properties, and key sites including Kaitoke, Lorenzen Bay, Wainui Bush Park, and Karioi maunga.
Their impact is tangible: the 2021 Weed Blitz removed around 200 cubic metres of pest plants, volunteers controlled large Privet sites that would have cost council and community partners significant sums, including work quoted at $140,000, and they continue to maintain restored areas.
Alongside weed control, volunteers teach landowners new skills, grow and share native plants, support cultural restoration projects, and collaborate with schools, marae, DOC, WRC, Karioi Project, and local residents to create lasting environmental change.
Mayor Aksel said the willingness of people to support one another is one of the Waikato District’s greatest strengths.
“Our communities are built by people who choose to give their time, energy and skills to help others. They don’t do it for recognition, but it is important that we take the time to thank them and celebrate everything they do. Strong communities don’t just happen. They’re built by people who step forward when something needs doing, and that’s exactly what we’ve recognised tonight.”
