Media Release: Waikato District Council, 12 August 2013
Work to repair slips on Ruakiwi Road begins this week (August 13) which means Te Akau’s school bus will soon be back on its usual route.
Heavy storms through winter caused a number of slips and hairline cracks on Raglan’s Ruakiwi Road prompting Waikato District Council to recommend an alternate route for the school bus service.
Waikato District Council Service Delivery Manager, Tim Harty says expert advice was sought on the stability of the road and the request to review the bus route made with the children’s safety in mind.
“Safety on our roads is always important and that includes keeping our school children safe. Our engineers reviewed the damage to the road and recommended we divert heavy traffic away from the area. As a result we contacted the local school bus service provider about the situation and they supported our decision to alter their route slightly.”
Mr Harty says the repairs are at three main sites and will take around 12 weeks to complete at a cost of $355,000.
