While the Luxon Government is patting itself on the back for completing the 60-metre roundabout in Piarere, after what the NZ Herald says came after years of calls for a safer intersection, no funding is available for the Whatawhata roundabout.
Waka Kotahi says that in 2023, they completed a feasibility study investigating safety improvements for the intersection of SH23 and SH39 in Whatawhata. As part of this they engaged with the community, which helped inform the detailed design: SH23/SH39 Whatawhata engagement summary – March 2023 [PDF, 1.8 MB]
The project was then put forward for construction funding in 2024 to be considered as part of the Government Policy Statement on Land Transport (GPS). This project was not prioritised to be funded via the next 2024-27 National Land Transport Programme (NLTP). The design and planning work for this project will be kept for future assessment, however nothing will be implemented at present.
