Raglan Wharf drowning victim named

Waikato Police, 10.07.13

The name of a man drowned in Raglan Harbour early on Monday morning (08.07.13) has been released.
Officer in charge of Raglan Police, Sergeant Neil Faulkner, says on behalf of New Zealand Police he wished to extend the service’s sympathies to the family of 43-year-old Hamilton man George Welsh Greening.
Mr Greening drowned after falling from the Dolphin Pier at Raglan Wharf while fishing with a friend about 1am.

Senior Sergeant Rupert Friend said emergency services were called to Raglan Harbour about 12.30am after reports of a person being pulled from the water unconscious.

“It appears two men have gone down to Raglan Wharf about 11pm to go fishing and while casting off at the end of the pier one of the pair has fallen into the water and was swept away in a swift current,” Mr Friend said.

“His friend has jumped into the water to try and save him but given the strength of the current, by the time he has gotten to his friend the man was already face down in the water and unresponsive.”

Despite the best efforts of the friend in getting him to shore, Mr Greening was not able to be revived and his death has been reported to the Coroner.
