The mountain of Karioi is a beacon of home for those living in Whaingaroa Raglan, a small seaside community on the west coast of Aotearoa New Zealand. An indigenous reclamation of whakapapa (genealogies) and narratives that are inextricably woven into the unique landscape of Karioi, TIROHIA KARIOI is an entirely community-led and made feature documentary. The film captures stories of those with deep connections to the mountain, from hapū (indigenous tribes) and settler families, to artists, retired trappers and the work of conservationists. At times confronting, TIROHIA KARIOI bears witness to the power of storytelling which connects people and place.
