“If I can build a backyard kiln, anyone can.”
Several years ago I learnt to make a ‘Wee Beauty’ of a salt kiln from a design provided by Peter Lange. It was the first of many purpose-built performance kilns I’ve had to tackle since in order to fire my large sculptures. Although not a natural at kiln building, with a few kiln-building guidelines and welcome help from my friends, we achieved some astounding results. So I fervently believe, if I can do it, anyone can!
In this workshop we will build an affordable, small gas-fired brick kiln (pictured), that is easy to fire by yourself (or with a friend) and can be used for bisque, soda or salt glaze firing.
Using well known flashing slips on our bisque ware, we will carry out a soda glaze firing on the second day.
You’ll come away with some basic knowledge of different kilns and their various uses; some fundamental kiln building guidelines; and the experience of building and firing a small brick kiln. Plus, you’ll have shared in the kiln-side camaraderie of the event.

Susan St Lawrence’s figurative sculpture are about the memories, stories and dreams that we all carry around inside of us. She also organises Community Hearth firings which are large performance kiln firings with lots of participants. These Community Hearth events are a chance for people to experience the wonderful sense of occasion and camaraderie that happens at a potter’s wood kiln firing.

Hi,
I am interested in your summer workshop. Is there still a possibility to join? Is there a possibility for my soon, during that time, to have a surf camp. He is 12 years old and we leave in New Caledonia so it’s a little bit complicated to have information. And my last question would be to ask you if you can recommand other nice backpacker adresses : the one on your website is fullybooked.
Many thanks in advance,
Anne

Hi Rodger,
Thank you so much for those precious informations.
I will contact them.
I’d like to know also if it’s possible to take other art classes after the 13th. I might stay around for a week and if my son has a surf camp, I’d like to practice more my creativity.
Many thanks,
Warm regards,
Anne
No other formal art classes on then. You are welcome to come to the Clay Shed at the Old School Arts Centre for a small donation. Susanne and the other members will host you. A woman from Ireland will be in Raglan and also at the Clay Shed at about that time.
