May 17 Movie – THE RETURN

A gritty retelling of Odysseus’ return home from war.

Graeme Tuckett Stuff/ The Post 4/5 Stars, “Fiennes is terrific in the lead, of course. He is one of the most versatile and prolific leading men we have, and I can’t think of anyone better to play the aged warrior King. Fiennes clearly also hit the gym in preparation, and he carries an impressively wiry and knotted physique into the film. Juliette Binoche – who starred in The English Patient with Fiennes – is similarly perfect as Penelope. The Return is well made and absorbing.”

After 20 years away, Odysseus (Fiennes) washes up on the shores of Ithaca, haggard and unrecognisable. The King has finally returned home but much has changed in his kingdom since he left to fight in the Trojan war.

His beloved wife Penelope (Binoche) is now a prisoner in her own home, hounded by her many ambitious suitors to choose a new husband, a new king. Their son Telemachus, who has grown up fatherless, is facing death at the hands of the suitors who see him as an obstacle in their relentless pursuit of Penelope and the kingdom.

Odysseus has changed too. Scarred by his experience of war, he is no longer the mighty warrior his people remember. But he is forced to face his past in order to rediscover the strength needed to save his family and win back the love he has lost.

DIRECTOR: Uberto Pasolini
STARRING: Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche

May 18: Movie – A COMPLETE UNKNOWN

Bob Dylan – He defied everyone to change everything.

At the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, a young Bob Dylan shakes up his act on the folk music scene by going electric and siring rock as the voice of a generation.

“But, what is here is still mostly excellent. The staging is gorgeous, the performances are exceptional and the writing never blunders by trying to explain Dylan or pin him down.” – 4.0/5 Stars Graeme Tuckett, Stuff/ Waikato Times
