Friends of Wainui is continuing the work started in May to prepare for new tree planting. Please bring a spade and join us this Saturday and Sunday (13 & 14) from 10.30am starting at the car park at 368 Wainui Rd. The weather forecast looks much better for Saturday than Sunday, but we aim to work on both days
The Friends look after the 10 hectare reserve, either side of the Wainui Stream, just beyond the Harbour Care nursery on Wainui Rd. This former farm, which is part of the 140 hectare council reserve, has had about 15,000 trees planted since 1993. The new planting of about 470 trees (mostly miro and kahikatea will fill in the remaining gaps.
More weekend work days will be run to plant the new trees, add to the labels which identify many of the native trees and to improve the signposting of tracks.
Work teams from Friends of Wainui tackle a variety of jobs every couple of weeks on Monday mornings (next 22 July). The main work is mowing the lawns and tracks, trimming the vegetation beside the tracks, cleaning the ornamental pond and keeping weeds and animal pests under control.
