At the Raglan Coastal Reserves Advisory Committee meeting on Monday 14th, the issue of dogs on Wainui Reserve was raised, as some dog walkers have recently been told dogs are banned on the Reserve. However, the Wainui Reserve Plan approved by the council in 2012 says dog walking is a permitted activity and states:
“Dogs may be exercised free of restraint between Wainui Reserve car park at the western end of Te Riria Kereopa memorial Drive to 300 metres south of the northern walkway at Ngarunui Beach below Wainui Reserve. In all other reserve areas, dogs must be kept on a leash.”
The Coastal Advisory committee discussed the problems some dog owners could have if cattle chase their dog, so warning signs might soon appear. Full plan available here (http://www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz/CMSFiles/f1/f197d45d-822e-4c89-82e8-b7b286fedaff.pdf)
Another discussion was around progress being made with getting a mountain bike track built in the pine plantation. Concern was expressed that there might be conflict with horse riders who have used the plantation to reach the beach. It was agreed that, as the horse and cycle routes won’t cross, there should be no problem leaving space for horses alongside the cycle track.
The next meeting of the Raglan Coastal Reserves Advisory Committee will be at 5.30pm on Monday 12 May in the Supper Room.

That’s great that dogs on leash can walk through the farm land and pines, then down to Wainamu beach to make a nice circuit.
