SH23 Raglan to Hamilton maintenance

Waka Kotahi says there’s plenty happening on SH23 in the lead up to Christmas. It’s spring so out come the maintenance crews.

Warmer weather is a sign that maintenance season is underway on State Highway 23 (SH23) between Hamilton and Raglan.  There’s a lot of work happening between now and mid-December, including road rebuilding and resurfacing as well as slip repairs to improve the safety, reliability and resilience of the route.  If you’re a regular traveller along SH23 please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey during November and December. We’re coordinating work across SH23 to try and minimise disruption as much as we can.  We know delays are frustrating, especially for commuters and we’re constantly monitoring travel times. Here’s a wrap-up of the main worksites along this corridor: Greenslade Road Shoulder and drainage work is underway near the Greenslade Road intersection, which is expected to wrap up this week. Then from next week we will start digging out the road for a full rebuild which will last until mid-December. Stop/go traffic management is currently operating around the clock and will continue during the rebuild phase. A temporary speed limit of 30km/h applies through the worksite.  We’re aware of road users reporting lengthy delays when we first set up on this site. We are monitoring travel times and delays are now under 10 minutes.

We’ll continue to monitor the travel times in the area and adjust the traffic management if needed. We know this work will cause some disruption, but it is essential to improving the long‑term condition and performance of the state highway. Please allow extra time for your journey. Whatawhata slip repairs This week work is starting on SH23 west of Whatawhata to repair a slip over the road, with work expected to take up to 4 weeks.  Stop/go traffic management will operate between 7am and 5pm while crews are on site.  Resurfacing east of Whatawhata Asphalt resurfacing on SH23 east of Whatawhata near Bowman Road is scheduled for the week of 29 November. This work will take place at night and is expected to take 5 shifts. Work coming up in 2027 There will be further resurfacing taking place in early 2027 as part of our state highway maintenance programme. We’ll let you know more about this work when locations and timing are confirmed.
