Fibre confusion and delays

UPDATE 28th January: Since this item was published on 2nd January, Ultrafast Fast Fibre have carried out required reinstatement work and website address checkers appear to be working correctly.

With Ultrafast Fibre going live across Raglan on 1st January 2020 there appears to be confusion with fibre retailers on where it is available.

Ultrafast Fibre says service is available along the road.

A check of 6 Cambrae Road using the Ultrafast Fibre web address checker shows that fibre broadband is available from 1st January 2020 at 16 Cambrae Road just along the street. (Ultrafast Fibre have advised that service is available at 6 Cambrae Road.) Using the Slingshot web address checker shows that fibre broadband is available at 6 Cambrae Rd. Over at the Spark, Vodafone and Chorus websites the checkers show that fibre service is not available at this address and only the old slow ADSL service is available.

So it may be best for Raglanites to deal with a fibre retailer who says fibre service is available if they decide to get connected.

Meanwhile some Raglanites have been waiting months to get damage done during the fibre installation to be fixed. After multiple requests over a four month period, the road outside 4 and 6 Cambrae Road was reinstated satisfactorily, however a concrete hole cut in the driveway to 8 Cambrae Road still needs to fixed. Over on Simon Road damage done to the concrete footpath when slabs were cut out, is still waiting to be fixed.

After four months this hole in the concrete driveway still needs to be fixed.

Festival circuit hit documentary BIGGEST LITTLE FARM follows filmmaker John Chester, his wife and their dog and they chase their dream to set up a sustainable farm – with zero experience.

“It all started with rescue dog, Todd. He just didn’t like living downtown, so cameraman John and caterer Molly decided to up sticks and move to a rundown homestead an hour outside the city. Their aim was to farm in harmony with nature – but the snails, coyotes and bugs etc., had other ideas. Restoring the soil, fighting off infestations, nursing pregnant pigs, coping with fire and drought – it’s all in a day’s work for the determined couple. By year eight, the natural world is rebounding – barn owls, bobcats, gopher snakes and more – and Apricot Lane Farm is alive with infinite possibilities.” (Sydney Film Festival)

Raglan Movies at the Old School is screening MRS LOWRY & SON on Sunday 5th Jan: Oscar winner Vanessa Redgrave and Cannes best actor winner Timothy Spall star in this British drama about artist L.S. Lowry and his domineering mother.

MRS LOWRY & SON

Having already played J.M.W. Turner to great acclaim, Timothy Spall takes on another English painter with equally compelling results. Laurence Stephen (L.S.) Lowry was a Lancashire artist whose depictions of industrial life only found an audience and admiration once he reached middle age.

Bed-ridden and bitter, his mother Elizabeth (Redgrave) actively tried to dissuade her bachelor son from pursuing his ambitions, whilst never failing to voice her opinion at what a disappointment he was to her.

NZIFF: “Focusing on the mid-1930s, the period just before Lowry was discovered, theatre director Adrian Noble’s film looks at the relationship between the then Pendlebury rent collector and his bed-ridden, domineering mother Elisabeth (Vanessa Redgrave). Struggling to pay off debts his father left behind, ‘Laurie’ also bears the brunt of his mum’s fragile physical and emotional state. “I’m never cheerful, not since 1868,” she opines, while grumbling about their working-class neighbours, her son’s apparent lack of ambition and his ‘hobby’. Seemingly taking delight in reading aloud a scathing review of one of his works in the local paper, she also casts doubt on the authenticity of a letter from London proposing an exhibition of his works. “Why can’t you paint something picturesque, tasteful? What about a bowl of fruit?”, Elizabeth chides.”

“Essentially a two-hander, Mrs Lowry & Son is a terrific, slow-burning showcase for the acting skills of Redgrave and Spall. Their scenes together crackle with tension and barely repressed anger, as Laurie finds his attempts to evolve stymied by his almost maniacal mum. The svelte Spall is particularly impressive, whether with brush in hand, or using the canvas of his face to portray the flickers of an artist’s pent up emotions.” — James Croot.

Extension of Time granted for the Proposed Raglan & Waikato District Plan (Stages 1 and 2)

Waikato District Council news

The Minister for the Environment has granted Waikato District Council a 14-month extension of time to give a decision on the Proposed Waikato District Plan, under clause 10A Schedule 1 of the Resource Management Act. This means that the decision may be made on or before 18 September 2021. This will enable a single integrated decision for Stages 1 and 2 of the Proposed District Plan.

The Minister for the Environment gave reasons for his decision, including that the extension would enable a more integrated decision across the two stages of the plan, the entire plan would be issued earlier than if the stages progressed separately, the integrated decision ensures informed and well-considered plan provisions, benefits outweigh costs, and the plan will deliver on the requirements of the National Policy Statement – Urban Development Capacity. The Minister’s decision can be viewed on the council website.
